The Kitschy Kitchen

When it comes to home accessories, I always find my favorites in the kitchen section.  This might be due to the fact that I am a Martha Stewart – Food Network – Williams Sonoma – Crate and Barrel junkie...or it just might be the fact that there are tons of quirky (and kitschy) items to choose from!  Here are a few of my top picks!
  1. Apple-shaped cutting board from MarthaStewart
  2. Heart-shaped measuring cups from FredFlare
  3. Mustache Man corkscrew from ModCloth
  4. Labeled jars (from Terrain, which is like a mix between Pottery Barn and Anthropologie!)

Color of the Week

I thought Gold would be the perfect color to start out with in my new weekly post "Color of the Week".
I, personally, LOVE to wear gold.  Gold shoes, earrings, ponchos (yes, I own a gold, sequin butterfly-shaped poncho), along with anything else that shimmers and shines.

How does one get away with wearing such a diva-licious palette? Simply load on a bunch of gold jewelry with a plain white tee and voila: instant glam!  Or you can layer gold shimmer with any eyeshadow for a quick transition from daytime to evening.  Amp up your look with a single, over-the-top piece, like a sequin covered cardigan, or a shiny pencil skirt!

Stay tuned for next week's color!  I'll give you a hint – it's blinding!

Kale

I had my first experience cooking with kale today, and I must say, it went very well. I threw this recipe together on the fly, and it is now officially in the "keeper" collection.

ingredients
  • 1 bunch kale
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 4 cloves garlic (diced)
  • 1/2 carton cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 box spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp sherry vinegar
  • splash of white wine
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tbsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded parmigiano reggiano
Cook pasta as directed on the box. Heat oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add onion, let simmer for 4 minutes, then add garlic. Chop kale into 2 inch pieces and add to the pan, making sure to coat all the kale in the olive oil (hint: use tongs for this). Turn to medium-high heat, and add the sherry vinegar, tomatoes, red pepper flakes, black pepper, and salt. Cover and cook for 5-8 minutes. Now, add the splash of white wine and the parmigiano reggiano cheese to the kale. Drain pasta, reserve 1-2 tbsp pasta water, then add pasta/pasta water to the kale. Cook for another 2 minutes and then enjoy!

Leather Mini Dress

AHHHHH!  (that feels good...)

Mid-Century Modernism

The most amazing architecture sits in Palm Springs! Think Don the Beach-Comber mixed with Frank Lloyd Wright, throw in a little Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby's old Hollywood glamour (ok, a LOT of old Hollywood glamour) and a hint of the Brady Bunch. That should give you a good idea....

Visit Palm Springs Modern Committee for more details and architectural tours.
